Applewhaites Plantation Yard - Hike #30

Another rainy weekend but so far the for the hike the rains have been most accommodating. The hike started in one of the inland parishes of the island, the parish of St. Thomas and traveled along cane fields, gullies and some main roads. The major gully traversed was Jack-in-the-box gully with it's interesting array of vegetation, remnants of stalactites and stalagmites and at the end or beginning of the gully according to how you look at it is Coles cave. A nice hike covering a distance of 5.6 miles.

Indian Ground - Hike #27

With constant rains in the morning and throughout the day, the prospects of a hike seemed a bit remote and I was even thinking, maybe i should give it a miss since we hiked that area in March of this year. But the hiker in me said no and I didn't regret it even though our island Barbados is small this route was totally different from the one taken in March. With some nice hills and scenery covering areas such as Greenland, Cherry tree hill, Farley Hill park Just to mention a few.
The only challenged experience during the 6.7 mile journey was the mud which made the uphill climbs a bit slippery and a tad harder having to walk with the mud on the boots.

Codrington College - hike #26

I can almost call this hike the religious hike as we started at Codrington College the institute of theological learning in Barbados, then stop at the Holy Cross church, St. John Parish church and the Pot House enclave of the Rastafarian movement.
This hike was a somewhat balanced mixture of uphill and downhill and provided excellent views of the country side from Ragged point to the right to Tent Bay on the left. And a chance to see one of the few remaining sun dials on the island
Another excellent hike covering 6.3 miles
Total so far for year 188.9 Miles

Wildey - Hike #25

This hike started at the historic great house that is now the headquarters of the Barbados National Trust and was a hike with a difference in that instead of tracks, bushes, fields and gullies it was in an urban/suburban setting passing car dealerships, hardware stores and houses but with some points of interest along the way such as the Harry Bailey observatory, the newly constructed south coast boardwalk, the military cemetry, the clock tower of the Legion, St. Anns fort and the Garrison Savanah as well as some costal scenery.
Being a moonlight hike not many photo opportunities were available, but an enjoyable hike never the less covering a distance of 7.7 miles

Spring Hall, St Lucy #24

Quite an improvement in the weather this week, instead of overcast skies it was a lovely, hot, bright sunny afternoon. Starting off from the old Spring Hall, sugar factory traveling through canefields, and along the flat trail along the cliff top giving an excellent vantage point of the rugged north east coast of the island coming to an area known as Cove Bay, turning inland and uphill after a stop for some coconut water fresh from a tree along the way. This enjoyable hike lasted a distance of 8.3 miles.

Haggatts, St. Andrew #23

This hike was expected to be challenging, as it was to be lead by a hike leader known to find difficult routes...But my bad run of luck for this week ran right into this hike and I had to abandon the journey to assist some of the fellow hiker who weren't up to the challenge and could not continue the journey...it was a tough decision should I leave them to get lost or should I help them..in the end the softer side of me won and I was only able to complete a mere 3.5 miles my only consolation being that the first climb through the water course and up the hill was enjoyable

Bath, St. John Hike #22

On a hot bright sunny afternoon, a welcomed change from the previous Sundays when it was overcast or rainy or both, we set off on a journey through the parish of St. John. This trip started with a steep uphill on a chalky surface which was a bit challenging for some. This route intersected with routes taken of previous journeys but still seemed fresh, with excellent views of the coastline, taking in the natural beauty of the island, as we passed by Codrington college, The Holy Cross Church, The St. John parish church and down hill through New Castle and Martins Bay along the coast to finish at Bath beach for a journey of approx 7.1 miles
Total for year approx 163.1 miles

Hike #21 St Thomas Hall Post Office

Overcast conditions could not deter us from bringing up the 150 mile mark. This was supposed to be a moonlight hike, but the cloud cover won the battle and blocked the view of the moon. But that didn't stop the enjoyment of the hike through the parish of St. Thomas climbing over fences, gates uphill and down hill, while enjoying fresh air, the sounds of nature. Even a night time trek through the Welchman Hall Gully was most enjoyable.
This hike covered a distance of approx 7 miles
